Love Running

Love Running
By: Robert Ryles

So what is it about running that attracts so many, compels so many obsessions and becomes such a drug? Is it the sheer agony of it all? The shortness of breath in the hot, gasping lung, the debilitating muscle cramps and joint aches or the intense fear of failure?

Maybe it is the joy of the 'open road', the freedom, the mind numbing ability of running to nullify the most potent of damning days in the office. Whatever it is if you run you get it and if you don't then you probably don't.

Runners are without doubt a breed on their own and you can spot one a mile off before they enter your company. I know I have treated so many. They will be the first to admit that itheir sport soon became 'love me love my running'. It often becomes the major thing in their life around which everything else has to fit.

Other sports, barring top level competitors, do not seem to have such an influence over participants with the possible exception of bodybuilding.

The History Of Running
The ancient Greeks were among the first humans to establish running competitions and running formed a key part of the ancient Greek Olympics.

Throughout history, the goal of competitive running has remained the same: to cover the set distance in the shortest possible time. The distances of competitive races range from short sprints of less than 100 meters, to marathons (26 miles 385 yards or 42.2km).

The origin of marathon running comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek soldier sent from the small town of Marathon to Athens to convey the message that the Persians had been defeated in a gruesome battle at Marathon. The diligent messenger ran the entire distance without stopping and subsequently died from exhaustion on arrival.

Running Today
The popularity of running has skyrocketed in recent years with the higher profile attained by distance events together with the acknowledged benefiits for health, fitness and weight control.
Apart from a good pair of supportive running shoes, there is relatively little equipment necessary. It can therefore be considered a relatively inexpensive sport, making it attractive for many people. Another reason that running is so popular is its inherant flexibility. All you need to pack is your running shoes, and you can "take" your sport with you anywhere in the world virtually.

Why Do People Run?
It's a good question. It may begin as as an experiment into losing a few inches but as any runner will tell you, in no uncertain terms, it soon becomes a drug.

For many, the attraction is the freedom, the outdoors, the elements and the the terrain but combined with that feeling of achievement that only distance running can give, you have a powerful concoction. As a stress reliever it has few equals.

Starting Out
If you are considering starting running there are a few key things to consider.
Running places a heavy demand on your cardiovascular and skeletal system. You should seriously consider consulting your doctor to check out your health as prevention is better than cure every time. This is particularly important if you are over forty, have not done any exercise for a while or have any previous medical history.

Having been a runner myself as well as a Physical Therapist I have no doubts as to the toll that running on hard surfaces takes on the muscles, bones and joints of your lower limbs, in particular your knees. In certain cases it may be that there are other sporting activities that are more beneficial than running, if you have any significant inflammatory joint problems or degeneration.

There is no doubt that running is a sport accessible to many and capable of improving cardiovascular fitness, assisting in weight control and in general lifestyle well being.
If you are fit to run and want to get into running here are a few good tips to begin with:

*Before you start get yourself checked out by a doctor.

*Obtain a good pair of running shoes.

*Start running slowly and do short distances concentrating on improving your running style and breathing.

*Join a club or run with an experienced runner initially to help you with your running.

*Initially I recommend you run 3 or 4 times a week utilising a correct warm up and cool down.

*Eat a healthy balanced diet and ensure you drink sufficient water before, during and after running.
Good luck and enjoy!

New eBook reveals snowboarding tips & tricks

New eBook reveals snowboarding tips & tricks
By: Peter Vandenberg

First some history, snowboarding originated in the U.S. in the 1960's. Early boards were very rudimentary in design compared to the models available today. More recent designs reflect the variety of riding styles that have emerged within the sport.

The growing recognition of snowboarding around the world is evidenced by its establishment as a sports discipline in 1995. Snowboarding competitions have been taking place for approximately 20 years, and include events such as the halfpipe, boardercross, slopestyle and parallel giant slalom. As such, snowboarding has been included in events in Winter Olympics and Winter X-games. It even has a US Open tournament of its own. The growth of snowboarding as a sport is undeniable as more and more people get hooked on it.

Now that you are among the countless ones who want to try out the fun and excitement that only snowboarding can give, it is high time that you learn the basics of making your very first downhill ride on a snowboard. So how do you begin?

First, you need to procure the necessary snowboarding equipment. If you already have the necessary equipment, you can start learning the basics of riding your snowboard. Here are a few important things to remember as you start to find your destiny in snowboarding.

Keep in mind that snowboarding is similar to snow skiing. The body movements that enable you to control and stabilize your snowboard are the same as the movements in skiing. Therefore, if you are already a skilled skier, there will be fewer problems for you ahead. A skier will have easier time than a skateboard thrasher to learn snowboarding.

Always be in a relaxed position. Like any sport, snowboarding requires a calm and hang-loose mindset. Most accidents and injuries in snowboarding happen when one is in tensed position. As you mount your snowboard, keep your knees bent; a stiff stance will only make you absorb impacts between your snowboard and snow.

Try steering the snowboard over the small area you are in. Practice making turns, learn the finer points of toe-side turns, which means turning by lifting your heels up while pressing your toes to the snowboard; or heel-side turns, which make use of your heels for your turning. Once you have mastered the basics of balancing and steering your snowboard, you can move to a bigger patch of snow, but do not try a long and steep slope just yet.

Now that you have actually moved on your snowboard, you have to learn how to stop your snowboard. Stopping a snowboard basically requires making more turns until you find your self going for an uphill position. An uphill direction will certainly slow your snowboard down until you are in a complete stop.

After learning all the basic riding movements, you are ready for the next level. This is where Matt Belair's Snowboard Academy comes in!Matt Belair is a certified Level 2 snowboard instructor who set up an online snowboard camp. The Snowboard Academy provides an ebook manual and three audio's in which you will learn an integrated system of snowboarding that includes: Mental Training, Physical Training and Focused Training. By integrating these 3 key parts in his training program, Matt Belair is able to teach you how to ride the snowboard park, how to make, the snowboard backflips, freestyle from spinning 720's over 55ft table tops to slaying city hand rails with ease and other snowboard tips and tricks.

Understanding The Short Game

Understanding The Short Game
By: Jack Moorehouse

Golf is a thinking man's game. You've probably heard this said a thousand times. But when they talk about golf being a thinking man's game, they're primarily talking about the short game. Shots beyond 125 yards are rather basic. You select a club, pick a target, and hit the ball with a full swing. Shots from 125 yards in are more varied. Two balls lying 5 yards apart and just 30 yards from the hole may require different shot strategies and techniques.

Understanding the short game is the key to golf. It's also key to lowering your golf handicap. A shot from 150 yards out requires one or two decisions. But a shot from 20 yards or 30 yards away requires several decisions. Considerations include lie, pin placement, type of shot, type of swing, and so on. That's why I tell players who take my golf lessons that if they're serious about improving their game, they must delve deep into the short game.

Two Ways to GoTwo types of shots dominate the short game-low running shots and high floating shots. Low running shots are preferable to high floating shots because they're easier to control. They're also easier to hit. High floating shots can lead to mis-hits, so you want to stay away from them, if you can.

To hit a low running shot, take a slightly open stance, play the ball back in your stance, square the clubface, keep your hands ahead of the clubhead, and swing shallow and U-shaped. Also, maintain firm wrists through the swing, don't release the clubhead at impact, and finish low and abbreviated.

To hit a high floating shot, take a slightly open stance, play the ball forward in your stance, open the clubface, keep your hands even with the clubface, and swing steep and V-shaped. Also, keep your wrist actively hinging, use a full release at impact, and finish full and in balance.

Work on hitting both types of shots in practice, as I've said in my golf tips. Learning to control these shots is the foundation of a good short game. Also, don't throttle back or try to hit a three-quarter- swing with these shots. Take a full swing. Some players need to practice hitting these shots with a full swing to convince themselves of that.

Basic PrinciplesIn my golf lessons I breakdown short game play into a few basic principals. The most important of these are probably that your forward swing should match your backswing in length and speed, and that the pace of your swing should never slow until after impact. Below are some other key principals I discuss in golf instructions sessions on the short game.

Never swing hard with a short club. With rare exceptions, you should never swing the 8-iron, 9-iron, or wedges with full force. The short game is about control. If you need more distance use a longer club.

Survey the land before hitting.Hitting accurate shots from 125 yards or shorter requires you to understand things like slope, types of grass, sand textures, the effect of moisture, and the type of bounce and roll you'll get in various areas of the green.

Don't be cute. When faced with a high, floating shot over a bunker, creek, or ridge, don't try to hit it close to the pin. Hit it up on the green and settle for a 20-foot putt or even a 40-foot putt. Good short game play is about strategies, skills, and percentages-not hitting miracle shots.

Concentrate on centered impact.Because the clubs are shorter, centered impact with the scoring clubs is easier than with the long irons and woods. But you still have to concentrate on it. Almost ever shot you hit in the short game requires solid, square contact.

Visualize the shape of your swing. The shape of your swing gives you a mirror image of the shot's trajectory. A steep, V-shaped swing tends to produce a high-arching shot. A shallow U-shaped swing tends to produce a lower, humpbacked shot.

Loft is the essence of the short game. The loft angle of a wedge or short iron has complex effects on your shot. When your high lofted club isn't sending the ball high in the air, it's doing something else-it's softening the force of your swing by turning launch force into spin, and installing a set of brakes on your shot, again through spin.

Keep these basic short game principals in mind next time you play. Use them as the foundation of your short game.

Learning to play the short game well is a challenge. It takes time, patience, and practice. It also requires you to think about every shot you take near the greens. But the pay-off is worth it. It's the quickest, most effective way of cutting your golf handicap down to single digits and becoming the player you've always wanted to be.

Different Styles of Martial Arts for Women

Different Styles of Martial Arts for Women
By: James Liu

More and more people are getting involved in Martial Arts due to its many benefits and its self defense techniques. This is especially true with women.

There is certainly no denying that women often feel more intimidated in this world than men do. Physically weaker than a man, women are often at risk and often they would not have a clue as to how to protect themselves if the need arose. Luckily there is something that you can do if you are a woman and you feel a little intimidated, and that is joining a Martial Arts class!
How a Martial Arts Class May be Able to Help You

There are a variety of different Martial Arts classes available to choose from and so you should definitely find something to suit your needs. You also have the option of choosing between a Martial Arts class aimed specifically for women or a mixed gender class which may be of preference to some women.

Obviously it all depends upon personal preference as to which kind of class you join, but overall there are advantages and disadvantages to both. For example, a female only class will not always teach you how to fight against men and that is generally the main reason you are taking up the activity. So, a mixed class will enable you to protect yourself against various different body shapes and sizes.

Not only will you learn how to protect yourself but you will also become a lot more confident. You will no longer be afraid of walking down the street alone as you will know exactly how to defend yourself if something did happen. Different Martial Arts teach you different methods of self defense and generally the following are some of the best to try:
• Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
• Judo
• Karate
• Kickboxing

The Martial Arts mentioned above are especially designed to help when you are attacked. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu helps you to fight on the ground whilst Karate is one of the more popular Martial Arts which generally helps you to fight and defend yourself at the same time.

Overall it is important to pick a style of Martial Arts to suit you and also which you will feel comfortable in. If you would not feel comfortable being in a male and female class then opt for simply a female only one. As long as you are happy you will learn the best in whichever class you choose.
